There has been some great advice given here, but one important question remains unanswered: are you flying up or driving?

If you are driving, you will have a lot more room to bring things along with you, but if you are flying, I do not necessarily agree that you should get your winter gear there. Some of it might be cheaper, but it might also be...well...more suited for Alabama than Alaska. And the more bags you fly, the more it costs.

If you look, you can find second-hand things at pretty good prices, some at local thrift stores (I just got an amazing haul at Value Village's Veteran's Day sale), or on craigslist. Lots of people dream of coming here, but there are also a lot who leave and want to get rid of their stuff as fast as they can.

If you have a vehicle you really want to keep, and the time, money, and attitude to make the trip, I have heard that the drive up here is absolutely amazing, not to be missed. But it is expensive. Flying is definitely cheaper, if you are traveling light. Either way, you are probably going to have to pare down your list of things to bring along, so make sure that you know what is irreplaceable to you and what is not.

*My favorite is the moose coming up to the deck for some scratches! That is precious. <3
