I used Cheap Wheels car rental when I moved up here while waiting on my pickup to be shipped here, and again later when a girlfriend from Colorado came to visit me. I thought they were fairly reasonable. However, you have to notify some of these car rental places in advance to make sure they reserve a rental, especially in the summer! A nurse friend from Bethel was here this weekend and rented one from the airport for $30/day.

Check into some of the B&Bs in town. Most of the rates are far less expensive than the hotels, but you need to book well in advance.

Housing with inlaws may be uncomfortable, even torture but I have researched prices and it's insane. Even a cabin by the week or month is better than a nightly hotel.

I'm planning my trip for next winter....found a great hotel for $89 with a kitchenette and puill out sofa for extra guests. Figure if I like the winter...I will love the summer. But my trip is to prepare for a move.

Goode luck! Shop around. Don't do the cheap/extended stay hotel downtown...heard horrible things about it. Prostitutes/drugs etc.

Anchorage Grand Hotel. It was for March....rates much cheaper. Summer rates are off the charts. Think I found it on travelocity but I went to their actual website to see if their was a winter special. Sometimes the actual hotel website has a better deal. Reviews are good.

That's a great price for the grand hotel! It is rated #12 in Anchorage on tripadvisor.

Yep. It pays to shop around a bit. If someone is willing to make the trip in colder months....it will save tons! Alaska is still beautiful. But for folks like myself that want to move....it gives us a chance to see Alaska in its less desirable weather. If I love it in Winter...I know I will love the Summer.
