My husband has orders to PCS to JBER and we will be there in 2 weeks. We do not want to live on post because we are want to save money to pay off some debt. I found some apartments that are reasonably priced called Brightonwood Apartments. I've read bad reviews (they were minor and petty complaints, in my opinion). We are not concerned with how it looks cosmetically. We just want a place to live that will allow us to save money and be safe. Safety is number one to us. We know you can't be safe anywhere, but you can try to choose a safer place over another. Does anyone know about this area? Would you recommend it for me, a military wife who will be alone from time to time and has no children? I've heard good things, and I've heard bad.

Thanks!

Stay in TDY housing on base while you're looking for a place. I am trying to help my youngest daughter find her first apartment here in Anchorage. We looked at Brightonwood. I thought is was a dump. To others it might be castle. That area from Debarr north to the base is so spoty. Sometimes you can find a great place and next to it will be a dump. You really need to see it in person before making a decision and committing to a 12 month lease.

There are nice apartments here in the South side of Anchorage. I couldn't tell you how much they were though.

Cruise the streets once you get there since you have the luxury of being able to stay in temp qrtrs. There are several nice plexes in the Muldoon area that are reasonable and safe. I have found that the best way to find the plexes is to drive around in the area you are looking at living in.

Although I have never been in Brighton Wood, I personally don't like Boniface between DeBarr & the Glenn Hwy. I would not consider that the safest area of town if safety is a top concern.

Isn't that a Weidner apartment?

I agree with those who say see the areas in person before choosing, rather than long-distance.

Good luck with your move!

There is an apt complex on the south side that prefers military kind of pricey around 1700 for 1500 sq ft 3 bd 2ba does have heated garage. Located off omalley an old Seward. South side is safer. Better schools. I agree with above comment look around for a while while stayin on base eagle rive is nice but short commute. East side has higher crime statistically and worse schools but upside is that it is close to jber.

Right now every rental is pricey in Anchorage. They've run a couple of news stories in the Anchorage Daily news about the housing shortages and i swear landlords started raising rents after those stories ran.
