I heard estimates of $39 million in lost revenue on the Kenai Peninsula, and $80 million in lost revenue in the Mat-Su Valley. The bulk of their revenue is going to be made from May through September, peaking in June and July. Between October and the beginning of May they are only going to have locals visiting their stores, and that is not enough for most lower-48 chain stores.
I don't know how to answer this, because you actually think (from the sounds of it) "big business" and "fishing" can EVER (successfully) mix without setting up responsible limits... and you're comparing (enter store name here) with the salmon industry...

I'm confused.

Thanks Glitch. I had no problem with Trout, in the -48, so have been really frustrated with catching nothing all these times. I am printing out your instructions, LOL, and taping them inside my tackle box. Maybe next time.....

Nope, Only a good thing for the people of Alaska. Hard on the competition but thats life in the big city. Will bring quality products, selection, item availability, and one very cool store to shop in.

Cabela's may be a "very cool store to shop in" the lower-48, but Alaska is not like the lower-48. The bulk of their fishing products are tailored for pan-fish (bass, crapie, perch, sunfish, catfish, etc.). There are no pan-fish in Alaska.

Even their line of hunting clothing is tailored for the lower-48. The camouflage all use lower-48 vegetation patterns, which sticks out like a sore thumb this far north. When was the last time you saw a tundra camouflage pattern?

Does that mean Cabela's is worthless? Absolutely not. Lots of Alaskans, including myself, buy Cabela's products, but whether or not they can make a profit in Alaska remains to be seen.

Glitch - You should offer your skills to Cabela's to make it a better store... I looked online and they said the store was going to use local talent to help customize the store to the area.

Why would I want to do that? There are already lots of local stores that sell the products I want. It also helps the Alaskan economy to buy locally because the money I spend stays in Alaska. Unlike with national chain stores, where the money I spend leaves Alaska.

I am all for more jobs in Alaska, but whether Cabela's sinks or swims in Alaska is entirely up to them.

The above statement... I figured you would want them to succeed. At this point, I would take anything made in the USA -- just doing that is getting tougher every day. I can only imagine trying to only buy stuff made in my current state of residence. Great and noble goal.
