I love driving but will not push through the night.
Would take suggestions on shortest route but of course I don't like the Canadian fuel prices.
Are there places for short naps lots of places to eat and what is recommended $ for trav.checks?
Do you want advice on how to prepare for the entire drive or just which route to take?

There are long threads devoted to people's preparations for the drive... I admit that I over prepare, but happy to share if needed/wanted.

And not pushing through the night in the summer isn't a problem in Northern Canada and Alaska... Night comes very late to almost not at all... Depending on time of year and how far north you go. (I did know what you meant though)

I wouldn't take travelers checks unless you get the conversion over to Canadian money when you get them. Right now you can get $1.25 (give or take) Canadian for every $1 US Dollar... Call your credit companies and see what their foreign transaction fees are. Getting an extra 25% for your greenback makes the fuel prices in sourthern Canada just a little expensive. Right now in BC the lowest prices are around $1.03 per liter and in Alberta I saw a lot of $0.90 per liter places these are the lowest. $1.03 x 3.78 - 25% currency conversion = $2.92 per US GALLON. ANd .90 X 3.78 - 25% = $2.55. In the rural North expect $1.49 and in beaver creek expect $1.79 per liter. ($4.22 and $5.07 respectively) Unless you bring extra fuel to get you past some of those points you are kinda stuck paying it no matter where you enter Canada. I bring extra fuel... When I went prices were higher - up to $1.99 per liter - and the currency exchange sucked...

Ohh and just because you get back into Alaska doesn't mean gas is cheap either... Right now, Tok is $3.08 to $3.19 for regular per gal... Anchorage is a little better at $2.73 per gal...

Eats on the rural end... You are very limited. I have had such hit and miss experiences I hate to recommend anything. You won't have a whole lot of choices in Canada besides expensive. Fast Eddies in Tok, AK has been consistently good and for us always seems to be at the right spot for stopping at on our trips too.
