haha - sure, I mean, there's nothing wrong with it. I just try to imagine living in Alaska and having to deal with having to find someone to take care of the cows when you want to go fishing for the weekend or whatever. I can see doing livestock in Montana where you can roam around on your horse and take your cattle on drives across the range (that's what you do with cows right? :P) but here? It just seems an awful place to have to deal with large animal husbandry. I don't understand the appeal. I'd think that wanna-be ranchers would be more attracted to Montana or Wyoming or some place like that.

Actually, mizzile, there's a lot more to livestock than beef cattle. The OP mentioned wanting five acres -- that tells me she's not planning on playing home on the range but is probably thinking more in terms of goats, chickens, maybe a horse. That's doable in the area she wants to go to. I don't know how this parallels to ranchers in Montana riding herd across the range. While I agree with you about wanna-be-ranchers being better off setting their sites elsewhere, no one in this thread was talking about large-scale ranching.

They said they wanted no less than five acres. That could mean a lot of things. People don't usually refer to chickens as "livestock."

Maybe not in Anchorage or Wyoming, mizzle, but I've heard chickens included plenty of times by people planning small-acreage menageries. At any rate, I highly doubt the OP is planning on running beef cattle.

Well, let's ask. Hey OP, do you want cows?

Beef cattle, mizzile, not cows. They could actually have a milk cow or two on five or so acres. Milk cows aren't ranged as you described. What you described was large-scale ranching.

You can take your cows on a drive if you just have two of them. You don't have to have 500 of them to do that. If you have two, you have cattle, and you can go on a cattle drive.

I don't know why you'd want cows if you don't get on a horse and drive them around. That seems like 90% of the fun if you ask me.

That's not how it works, mizzile. Plenty of small-acreage homeowners manage to have dairy cows or beef cattle without chasing the animals around on horses. I believe there are dude ranches you can go to in order to do this for fun.
