Hi all! Just found out we're being transferred (military) from PR all the way to Anchorage! I'm mostly excited, but I am a bit nervous because of such a big change. I'm from Florida, so I have absolutely NO winter clothes at all. Does anyone have any suggestions for good, decently priced online shopping for clothes? We don't have anywhere locally we can shop in that carries warm clothing, so I'm not holding out much hope for great bargains. We'll be arriving in May/June, but even that is colder than the winters I've ever experienced. My husband was in Kodiak around 6 years ago, so he has some, but needs quite a bit too.

Also, any suggestions on how/when to find a home with our 3 larger dogs? We have a 14year old mixed breed (65lb) and two 2 year old PR Satos (50 lb street rescues). It's definitely NOT an option to leave any of them, and we are willing to rent an older home, pay an extra deposit/monthly fee, or whatever for however long our older girl has left. We really don't have a lot of requirements on what kind of place we're looking for, as long as it's got a fenced backyard and 3 bedrooms. Any idea when I should start reaching out to postings on CraigsList or other sites? We're also planning on contacting a realtor to have them search for rental properties if that'll help. Thanks for any help!

Try Cabellas online[https://www.cabelas.com/]. There is a store in Anchorage now.

Are you wanting to live in Anchorage, or are you willing to commute? If you go out to Eagle River, Chugiak, Peter's Creek, Wasilla or Palmer, you'll find more housing options.

Thank you! I hadn't remembered about Cabelas!

We're definitely considering Eagle River as a top possibility, and I added Peter's Creek and Chugiak to the list. I'd like to minimize the commute as much as possible, since we've had a ridiculously long commute here in PR (only 10 miles, but it has taken 2.5 hours before!) and it'd be nice to be within 25-30 min close to things.

Good for you on keeping the dogs. They'll love AK but watch them around moose. Moose think dogs are wolves (their biggest enemy) and will stomp them. Seriously.

Thanks for the advice! I so hope they love it. Our boy was found half alive in a box on the road at around 3-4 weeks old, and as a result he absolutely hates being out in the sun and heat. Our backyard also faces the area he was found, and there's a TON of street noise at all times, so he panics when it's really bad. I'm really hoping the change in climate and noise helps him be stronger and more confident, but he's always leashed and kept close on walks so he doesn't freak out. Our younger girl is super easy and adaptable (and also always leashed), so she'll love it. I am a bit worried for our older girl since 14 is pretty old to fly cross country, but she's super healthy for her age and liked Alaska weather when she was there last, but we most likely won't take her out of the house except to potty in the backyard since she walks a bit stiffly here, and I know it'll get worse there. She'll like laying by a fireplace though!

If you're coming in May/June, I would just order one or two pair of pants and one decent spring jacket for each of you, and buy the rest after you get here. Hauling a bunch of stuff to Alaska is a huge hassle, even with a company sprung move, and you can save a ton of cash by buying winter clothes at thrift stores and winter gear swap shops, especially right after the season like that when many people will be donating their clothes they don't want.

Awesome! I didn't even really think about thrift stores! Thanks!

I would try Value Village... I'm not sure about Anchorage, and someone else here will be able to confirm, but that's definitely the good thrift store in Fairbanks!
