I've read in various threads that property taxes are high in AK. Since "high" is relative, I was wondering if any of you had any examples you'd like to share. We're trying to figure costs for when we move there and this is an unknown so far.

Our house here is 2304 sq ft on a small 70x155' lot. 3 bed, 2 bath. The property tax is based off of the county tax appraisal of $115K (we have cheap housing here) and comes to $2,070/year or 1.8% of the appraised value. How does AK compare?

What area of Alaska are you thinking of moving to?

That's what I think every month when I make a payment...

We'd like to move to 1) Homer, 2) Kenai/Soldotna, 3) Anchorage. That's our order of "likes", but it will depend on where I get a job, so it'll most likely be in Anchorage. I've applied for a few jobs and will be heading on up as soon as I get one. The house and 87 Grand National are on the market now. Just waiting....

I'm surprised really. I read somewhere tht KS is ranked in the top ten for lowest tax burden states. Maybe that just isn't the case at all. Those sound like Texas property taxes! I"d say they sound like WA state taxes, but I don't know of a livable home for 115K LOL

I can't speak to AK taxes, since I don't live up there anymore, but I'm sure others on this forum can. I hope it all works out for you. Best wishes.

Yea, it sounds like a craphole when I say $115K for the county appraisal, but it's pretty nice actually. Anyone wanna buy a house?

Anyone else have AK property tax insights?

It varies. I hear Fairbanks is the worst, but Anchorage and Mat-Su are bad too (they have websites you could check for the tax rates). Unorganized borough has no property taxes.

Looking at my 08 tax bill, it shows that Anchorage is right around 1.25%. It's surprising that where you are actually has such a high rate, but since you'll probably be hard pressed finding anything decent in Anchorage for less than $200k, in terms of real dollars you'll still end up paying more.

The Mat-Su Borough has raised property taxes but is no way in line with Anchorage who has property taxes through the roof.

In my opinion, any property tax is too high.
