Hi

I have officially accepted a position with Anchorage School District. I am leaving late next week to start making the move to Anchorage. In the past week, I have learned that the bank and car insurance that I have used for the last 15 years is not up in Alaska. I got the bank issue covered. As time is flying by and reality is hitting me that I will be up there, questions are popping up. I am very excited to move up there. I have always wanted to for the longest time. The timing was perfect this time.

1. I am concern about being able to find an apartment that I can immediately move into. Should I be concern? Could I find an apartment and move in within a couple days after arriving in Anchorage. I am not comfortable searching/booking apartment online. I want to see it.

2. Any ideas for car insurance? What are the major auto insurance companies up there? Are the rates higher up there?

3. What major department stores are up there?

4. I read somewhere about significant tide change and waves? Where can I see this?

5. We are taking a ferry and getting off at Haines with a 2 day stop in Juneau. How is the drive from Haines to Anchorage? Is there a lot of drop offs, curves etc. How is the road?

6. Any ideas on how to adjust to living in Anchorage? Time change/hours of light etc.

thank you
Jennifer

Instead of making new threads, why not stick to one and add more questions to that one?

You can use any insurance company, use the one you have now, it'll work.

We have Geico, State Farm, And every other insurance company on the planet. All you need to be legal is proof of liability insurance for a vehicle.

We've got Fred Meyers, Target, Walmart, not to mention many malls etc.

You can see significant tide changes along Turnagain Arm which is very near Anchorage.

If your coming up this month there won't be much of a change as far as daylight. Days are getting shorter here.
Only a day or two and you should be adjusted to our time zone.
