Hi

I moved up here a couple weeks ago and I am just now getting around to getting my vehicle registration and license transferred to Alaska.

With the vehicle registration, I have a 2008 car. To register this car, do I need to pay $100 plus an additional $99 (taxes). OR is it just the $100.

Is it really $100 for a driver's license?

Am I understanding these fees correctly. It seems like alot.

The vehicle registration in my previous state expires on Sep 13, so time is running out. I am planning to do it this week.

Also, do they take cash, card. I have looked at the DMV site and it is confusing. I can't figure out my questions.

Oh yah!. I love Anchorage so far. Nice quiet town. Can't wait for the winter.

Thanks
Jennifer

I dont think the drivers license costs that much but i seem to remember paying $270 to register the truck, thats for 2 years. Also as you are in Anchorage you will need an emissions test thingie not sure how much that costs either.

Pretty useless reply really .. if gives you a laugh i failed the drivers test the first time and embarrassed my teenage daughter !

You wont have to get an I.M. On a 2008 vehicle maybe in a couple years you will need too

Hi Jennifer!
Best I can remember - the drivers license is 25$, but study for the test - no crap! We both failed it once too before passing.....I think it's some rite-of-passage or something .

The registrations can be expensive but (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) I believe the fee covers you for 2 years, and the guy that did our taxes said 1/2 of that is tax deductible. (because half is considered a property tax....much like your real estate taxes can be used on your fed. tax return.)

Hope I didn't confuse you worse!
Dawn

The $100 you saw was for a commercial drivers license. A regular drivers license is $20. Do study for the test as some rules may be different from other states. Also, there are some numbers you need to refresh in your mind since the last time you took the test. Link to drivers manuals:

Driver Manuals (http://www.state.ak.us/local/akpages/ADMIN/dmv/dlmanual/manuals.htm - broken link)

This contains a practice test:

Converting Out-of-State or Out-of-Country Licenses (http://www.state.ak.us/local/akpages/ADMIN/dmv/akol/new2ak.htm - broken link)

For the vehicle, I believe you do have to pay $199 for the plates. It is good for 2 years. Also they do take VISA/Mastercard.

HiThanks everyone for clearing up my confusion. $20 sounds alot more reasonable than the $100. I have taken the practice test twice and only missed 1 problem. I am going to attempt it and if I fail it, I will try it again and again. I have another year on my out of state license but I have at least 60 days to get my Alaska license. My registration for my car is due by this weekend. This cannot wait. Can I still register my car if I fail the license. ThanksJennifer
