Living without a Car : Is it possible in Ann Arbor?

I grew up in Detroit (and its suburbs), and felt it important look somewhere in the state - hence my interest in Ann Arbor. Upon further reflect, I wonder if the "walkable downtown pocket" is going to be interesting enough for an older person like me, who is years away from his student days.
( It might make me feel "really old". Haha)

But I appreciate everyone's comments here.

You can hang out in "real Ann arbor" (where the older people hang out and do business) and find quite a lot to do without even going into the campus/student areas. You can take am-track to Dearborn or to Detroit, but the schedule is very limited and very unreliable. No idea if there are buses. You can ride a bicycle out to places like south lyon, maybe Hell, Plymouth, Hines park, Dexter, maybe even Chelsea if you are in good shape. Still you woudl want to rent or borrow a car on occasion.
