NYC by far. Than DC. Than Chicago. Baltimore has some really beautiful architecture, although it's probably last place on this list, although i love it so much. It could compete with only a few cities on there like Philly. Maybe if a ton of rehabing of buildings goes on more Baltimore could do better!
I like NYC's the best because of the divserity. From over 400-year old Dutch colonials to modern towers. From the Roaring 20s and 30s Depression to the boxes of the 60s-80s. If any of you haev ever seen South Street Seaport in Lower Manhattan, you'd realize that NYC is not all just skyscrapers. South Street Seaport and the Lower Manhattan skyline is the biggest difference between architecture in the country, without a doubt. South Street Seaport has cobblestone streets and colonials backdropped by modern skyscrapers.
I'd go with Chicago next. Then Buffalo (home to a couple of Frank Lloyd Wright's mastrpieces). Buffalo will surprise many people. People think of it as a crime-ridden rust belt industrial wasteland, but the architectural beauty is amazing. The Old Central Terminal used to be bustling, now it's in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country in the 24th most dangerous city in the country. The Buffalo City Hall, old psychiatric hospital (which is supposedly haunted), etc. But the architectural genius remains in Buffalo, rusted and kept secret... But it's there.
I like the architecture of NOLA the most, it seems to have the most types of styles and influences (French, Spanish, creole, American, etc..) It also has some of the oldest architecture out of most major US cities. I just enjoy walking all over the city and am constantly observing the buildings everywhere.
This is actually a very hard vote. I finally hose Chicago because it has a great variation of architecture. Even Frank Lloyd Wright loved Chicago and he was America's best architect. IMO.
Although NYC is always in the conversation with good reason; I chose Chicago because it's flat out eye candy. Spire will really set it off. Best mix of old and new architecture anywhere.
