Honestly, the best water out of the tap that I've had in AZ is at the Italian restaurant in Strawberry. It comes right from their well and is clean and cool.

It depends on how picky you are. I drink the tap water in Phoenix but it's not as good tasting as the water in Seattle. A filter will help.

I would be more worried about what's in the water than how it tastes. The wells in some parts of the state are contaminated. The kind of contamination depends on what kind of industry was in the area.

I've taken a drink from faucets all over the valley and it all tastes fine to me as long as it's cold.

My dog drinks out of the pool and she hasn't complained either.

I've been all over the state; Flagstaff had the best water I've tasted. Everything in the metro area had an "off" taste. I think much of it is very similar; for example, there is a plant in Mesa that diverts drinking water to Phoenix and Mesa. Drinking water generally comes from SRP (Salt River) or canals from Colorado River. Many wells, also. One has to look out for arsenic in certain places ( I know Flagstaff incurred great expense to bring one well up to stricter arsenic ppm guidelines ). Watch out for gasoline contaminated groundwater along route 66 (Holbrook). Generally, anything on the Colorado Plateau will have good water from its good aquifer, or fresh melted snow. I believe the water from wells in the desert has more colloids, salt and pesticides. Wells are good, just make sure it is capped well enough.

I remember reading that years ago they had to do something about some wells in Scottsdale that were contaminated from some industrial solvents.
