I have noticed the last few weeks the the grocery ads from Fry's, Safeway, and Basha's are down to 4 pages now. They used to be 8 or 10 pages. Is this the start of a new trend?

Fry's, particularly, is really promoting going online and downloading instore coupons on to your shopper's card. I don't know if the others are doing the same thing. If so, fewer of the sales are actually being advertised.
