Others have mentioned it also, but do take the route thru Sedona and up Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. This route is one of the most scenic in the US. It shouldn't add more than an extra hour to your trip. If you have an extra 30 minutes also drive out Dry Creek Road into the canyon area before continuing up to Flagstaff. The town of Sedona isn't much to look at, but the Red Rocks are incomparable!

Visit Montezuma Castle and Montezuma Well of MC National Monument just east of exit 289 an hour and a half north of PHX. Montezuma Castle (Fee area) is one of Arizona's best preserved and largest ancient Indian ruins with Visitor Center and tours. Montezuma Well is free but even more worth seeing, IMO. It combines natural beauty, geological wonder, and Indian ruins on one short self guided walking tour. Allow at least half hour. You won't ever forget this place.

Oh, and another absolute MUST SEE, especially since you're driving right by, is Petrified Forest National Park. East of Flagstaff on I-40.
