Are there any plans to revamp the general issue license plate in a way where the paint isn't peeling off? Although license plates are really nothing more than a tax receipt, I would still think that the state would want to take some pride in the plates it requires residents to affix to their cars. It says something about the state.

There are so many plates here that are completely grey because the cheap paint on them has completely worn off from sunlight. At first I noticed that it was an issue with the embossed plates (raised letters and numbers) and not the flat plates. However, I have noticed lately that some of flat general issue plates are starting to crack and peel. I am aware that the sun is brutal in this state and does a number to the paint, but you would think that the state would have come up with a way to rectify this issue. There are plenty of the older brown plates still on cars here that don't seem to have this problem at all.

Even though this probably isn't a pressing issue for the state right now, it really makes the state look like it's in bad shape with such cheap plates. Our neighbors in New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, and even Sonora don't seem to have this problem.

Anyone know what's up?

I think those were on the old steel plates. Im not sure what material the new plates are made out of, but they dont appear to have that problem. Well, at least not so far.

Might want to check with the license plate people at State of Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). "Peely" plates may be a problem, but I've never heard of anyone getting ticketed for such a thing.

The plates that peel are old and have raised lettering. The new ones are entirely flat and won't peel.
