+1

After spending a couple of decades working in automotive parts & service (including a couple years of paying warranty claims), the opinion I've personally formed is that you can't really "buy" your way out of repairs.

Old cars break, new ones do too.

A "nice" car (usually) runs when you turn the key & doesn't have a monthly payment attached - even if it's nearly old enough to vote.

The fact that you're not paying nearly 10% of the value in sales taxes every couple of years & increased license / insurance fees is a nice benefit, as is a ~$40 bill for a two-year plate.

But please keep buying/leasing new ones - someone has to pay the bills around here... ;-)

I was hoping when it came to getting plates on a lease, you would only get wacked for the "leased amount" of the car,( on my 50k lexus, its about 30k or so), but, as you said, "they get you one way or the other"!
Are there tollways everywhere in AZ now, or are most highways still free? In Illinois, all the new roads are tolls, and even though we were promised they would only be tolls "until they were paid for", those roads NEVER became free ways, and every new road now becomes a toll road..
Between that, and having the highest gas taxes in the nation, and the sheetiest roads in the country, its no bargain driving here either...Add the salt/rust cycle of the winter, and it just sux having a nice car here..
No toll roads in AZ (yet). Hopefully never!

The VLT is calculated on the MSRP of the base model of your vehicle. Current value doesn't have anything to do with it. Note that I said base model. For example, my car had a base MSRP of ~$48k when new, even though the sticker on it was closer to $60k with all of the options. MVD calculates the VLT based on the base model value of ~$48k. You will not be charged sales tax again. The calculation and base value can be confusing, so if you really want to know exactly what you're going to be paying, you can always call MVD and ask. They'll run the VIN and tell you what you'll owe.

Auto registration on newer cars and sales tax are the kickers here compared to many other states. The sales tax percentage in most areas here is very comparable to IL though. In fact Crook County and Chicago are higher. As far as auto registration goes, just keep in mind that you'll be paying about a third to a quarter of the property taxes you were paying in Illinois and housing is more affordable, so you're coming out way ahead. (I came from IL, so I know!)

Good luck!
