All I can suggest that if you really want to live in AZ avoid places that tend to swing more towards the trashy way of life. I've lived in Phoenix, and if weren't for the heat I would of loved living there, never had any problems with race whatsoever. I forgot the name, but I want to say the Mills? area was freaking awesome on a Friday night.

If racism is a big deal (I can't blame you there, I've dealt with stupidity from racists here in AZ for near 30 years) just know that it's not just AZ but America as a whole. Most of the Phoenix area is pretty diverse so no problems there, Flagstaff was also a breath of fresh air when I could enter a restaurant without getting stared down. People were generally friendly and were a surprising amount of interracial couples, and no one gave a crap, lol. If I were you, avoid the more smaller, dirtier, slummy looking cities if you can afford it. One life lesson I've learned is that places where country music or old rock is more prevalent, tread carefully.

Not trying to be negative, just offering a perspective that many would never have to experience.

"Illegal" isn't a race. Most Arizonans, including many immigrants that came here legally, don't like people breaking our laws, regardless of their skin tone.

I think the conversation has veered in a direction not intended. There are good and bad people in the HUMAN race. Period. I am a journalist and know how stats and numbers can be manipulated to support the researcher's assumptions or prejudices. Please, let's not judge an entire group (white, black, Native, Asian, etc,) by the actions of a few or statistics because it only feeds the stereotypes in the media. All blacks are not violent and all whites are not racist. Again, in response to the OP's initial question, I say yes, an African American can make a living out here.
