If you drive about 30 miles south of Winslow on SR 87 you get into pine forests at about 7000 foot elevation. I have a cabin in this area. Homes can run from the upper 100s to the upper 300s in the various communities in the area. There are many year round residents, most of whom are older, though a few have younger kids. There is no school, they bus to Winslow I think. Commuting to Winslow is pretty easy as the road is mostly arrow straight and you can go 80 mph (not legally of course, limit is 65).

Winslow, AZ is an old Route 66 town. About 5 miles of the actual road run just west, then thru town and east of it. It was bypassed by Interstate 40 around 1979 and has struggled to recover ever since. Besides the prison, the town caters to mostly passers thru and truckers who don't want to pay high fuel prices in California. It does have a quite colorful history tho. In the 1880s after the Santa Fe railroad came thru, it was one of the most lawless towns west of the Mississippi. I'm originally from Arizona and have made several trips out there this past year and usually pass thru the town to escape the monotony of the interstate.
