Hi Zonies!

What is the current situation crossing southbound into Sonora Mexico from Lukeville. Do US citizens need to show passports to Mexican custom agents or are they simply inspected and waived thru.

I am looking for answers from folks who have personally crossed recently by car to visit Sonoyta or Puerto Penasco and not links to websites.

Over here in San Diego Mexican customs check passports going southbound into Baja but for pedestrians only, I am sure the situation varies from crossing to crossing.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you, but most of the posts on there were about how dangerous Mexico and cartel talk and this and that.
I've traveled to Mexico plenty of times so I am not worried about that.

Anyone with recent experience crossing south, my question is...

Do US citizens need to show passports to Mexican custom agents or are they simply inspected and waived thru at Lukeville, AZ?

Make sure you get Mexican auto insurance at one of the several shops in Ajo before crossing. Get booze at Vasquez liquor in Sonoyta too.

Thanks, my story is my brother in law has decided to join us for a trip down to Rocky Point, we have our passports but he will have only his ID and birth certificate in hand, so despite the passport rule, we are not worried about getting back into the US as a US citizen must be allowed reentry into his own country. I am sure we will get a talking to by CPB on the return or even delayed at secondary, but eventually we will be allowed to pass. Why he doesn't get the passport is beyond me.

What I am after is do Mexican authorities at the specific Lukeville/Sonoyta check for passports going southbound or are drivers simply waved thru. I am more worried about not be let into Sonoyta versus no being allowed to come back to the US, I have a 900 dollar non refundable reservation waiting for us at a local resort.

Not looking for criticisms, just answers to my specif question from experienced crossers at Sonoyta/Lukeville. Thanks all.
