I see that some areas in CA are requiring solar panels be installed on roofs of new homes.
I have often wondered with our abundance of sun how long it will be before new home owners are forced to have the solar panels?
I suppose it makes sense but I looked into it once and removing the solar for roof repair or replacement was expensive.

Since APS and SRP both hate home solar I'd guess nearly never. On new homes it isn't that big of a deal because a concrete tile roof should last 30-50+ years which is well beyond the ROI on owned solar. What we should start to see is roofing companies in the next 10-20 years figure out more efficient ways to deal with repairs/replacements on solar homes or they will start to struggle to stay relevant.

Maybe, but not all homes are built with tile roofs. Ours is 11 years old a comp.
And labor is still labor, I was quoted $750 to remove and reinstall the stuff.

A friend had his roof replaced and at the same time, installed solar himself. Did quite a number on his knees.

I believe the push for solar on all new CA homes -- as if they're not expensive enough already -- is political cronyism. Musk loses money with every Tesla built and Solar City isn't doing so hot as part of Tesla, so this looks like an attempt to save his company. California, thy middle name is corruption. I doubt mandatory solar will happen in AZ. Unless your state government has a well-connected and very wealthy crony/campaign donor who happens to own an enormous and struggling solar business.

Yes, I was born and raised in N. CA. Moved out with early retirement (forced in 1993).
CA was always a bit corrupt in my opinion, but it got even worse as time went on until we could not stand it anymore.
I was actually glad that I had to retire early so I could get out. We never planned on paying high taxes on our retirement incomes anyway.

We have one fairly new subdivision here that appears to be ALL solar. Every roof has a bunch of solar panels on it. I haven't checked out any of the others but it doesn't surprise me.

yep, APS/SRP do everything they can to discourage widespread solar usage, so doubtful it will ever become "mandatory" in AZ, even though it should be, for sure..
