In researching auto sales tax rates, I came across a web site that summarizes tax rates across Arizona cities. The article closed with this qualifying statement, "The maximum tax that you may have to legally pay is 975 dollars".

Unfortunately, it does not explain any further. Does anyone understand where and why this limit applies?

All I see is this - https://www.valleychevy.com/if-i-buy...-pay-in-taxes/

My reading of this is that the $975 cap is for City or County taxes, not state. But that doesn't look like a particularly authoritative source.

I've bought many vehicles and have paid much more than $975 for sales tax.

Yeah, no way is the sales tax on a new vehicle that low. This state encourages people to drive clunkers.

Well, it really doesn't say much more than I mentioned, but maybe you'll see something in it I didn't...

Oh, well, that's nothing. It's bad info from an unofficial, random website.

AGREE, LBTRS . . .

In fact, the Sales Tax on my last vehicle was more than THREE TIMES $975.

The sky is the limit. But wait! Then you get hit with an outrageous registration tax the first few years too (now increased by $32 to afford gold plated toilets for DPS use).

No wonder Phoenix never meets its emission quality goals. Too many junk cars on the road due to high sales taxes.
