Has anyone ever run into one? Do they have any authority within Arizona? Like do you have to provide your ID. Gentleman yesterday asked for my ID, took a picture and stated I'd get a summons in the mail. If you must know the situation, I was target shooting in an area that is supposedly closed,but I checked on the us restrictions sight and isn't..

Was he wearing a uniform?

I've always wondered, in general, whether a person is obligated to show identification to anyone. I mean, apart from trying to enter somewhere.

AZ Rangers...
Arizona Rangers work in pairs or with a sworn officer from your department and are always in uniform, armed with primary sidearm and secondary defensive means. Arizona Rangers exercise powers afforded by the Arizona Revised Statutes, or explicitly granted under the authority of the agency being assisted. In order to perform their mission, the Arizona Rangers corporation carries liability insurance.

He was uniformed. And I saw that information, but this gentleman was by himself which threw me off. And I guess that clause does give him some authority then. I will wait for my summons in the mail and update yall on what occurs.

The quote up top makes them seem semi-legit. This one: "As an armed uniformed volunteer law enforcement auxiliary, the Arizona Rangers can provide additional manpower at the request of any federal, state, county, or local law enforcement authority" Makes them seem like MCSO posse members.

Bit of a dangerous game.

My understanding (from indirect experience with them managing events and from reading their website) is that they have no actual LEO powers and anything they would do would be as a private citizen (or as a referral to a LEA for possible follow-up). I see nothing on their website that would indicate otherwise (except for the apparently deliberate implication that they are LEO/LEA-like).

I am not a lawyer, nor a LEO, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, so take that for what it's worth, but I wouldn't sweat this. If there is a next time, you might ask for a badge number, current photo ID showing agency affiliation, and/or call the law enforcement agency he purports to be enforcing laws on behalf of to confirm he has any authority to do so (obviously only if it is reasonable, safe, and prudent to do so).

This sums it up better than I could above:

"The Arizona rangers do not possess any law enforcement or investigative powers that are not provided or established in law for all citizens of this state."

From: https://www.azleg.gov/ars/41/04201.htm

LEO = Law Enforcement Officer
LEA = Law Enforcement Agency

I didn't want to make light of a potentially bad situation but the image of a cowboy with a big bushy mustache, 10 gallon hat, star on his leather vest, ridin up on his horse, did cross my mind.

You forgot the state handgun that should be strapped to his hip to finish the uniform, hehe. But I think the 10 gallon hat is more a Texas thing, here they're more like 8 gallons or so, right?

Seriously though Jerry599, were you on State trust land or BLM land? BLM land is mostly OK to target shoot, but state trust land is a no-no unless you are legitimately hunting. And to make it even better (more confusing), the land ownership can be checker boarded by section across the state.
