And many people dont get medical treatment and survive. Would I recommend NOT getting medical treatment? Absolutely not. But many a people have been bitten and been absolutely fine, minus pain and discomfort for a few days. Its not a death sentence like everyone seems to think.

This is true. Mojaves have a very potent mix of neurotoxins that can and will claim your life should you choose to neglect medical treatment.

The thought of a Rattle snake bites gives me the willies.
This link will give you an idea of how bad a rattle snake bite can get.
If you don't have a strong stomach don't view the photos. the photos are not on the first page so you can read the background if you don't want to see the aftermath.

Default Don't spray

Dear Lord, if you don't want your children stung by scorpions, you certainly don't want their little bodies absorbing all of the toxins in pesticides. Sulfer (suggested earlier by someone) is not going to make your children sick, but it will repel scorpions. Also, seal up their access points with caulk; get a cat (she'll eat em); and if your HOA allows it, get a couple of hens. Hens absolutely love to eat scorpions and will wipe out the population in no time, with the added benefit of providing fresh eggs for you (organic, if you don't spray).

That is an EXTREME case, hardly the norm. Do you know how many 10s of thousands of people are bit by venomous snakes every year? You know how many fatalities occur? I believe they say the odds are higher to be struck by lightning than to die by venomous snakebite (in the USA).

Why wouldnt it be ok? I think its hilarious that you think that keeping a venomous arachnid or reptile is bad, when you dont know the first dang thing about them. Youre the type that gets those ridiculous "deadly toilet spider" emails and believes them. Until you understand the creatures, dont open your mouth and rip on those who keep them, makes you look stupid. Especially when you call scorpions/spiders/etc "insects".

Facts about keeping venomous critters as pets:

1. Out of 1500 known scorpion species, only 2 dozen are POTENTIALLY lethal to humans.

2. Most scorpions live around 5 years, some up to 15. Whats better than spending $10 on a scorpion and having it live for 10+ years!

3. Most scorpion venom is less potent than a bee's. Nothing at all to worry about! I keep these species only (as I have a young son), got rid of all my more potent species (who were even locked in cages).

4. Scorpions can go over a year w/o food or a single drop of water. Theyre ridiculously easy to keep.

5. Plus, what other animal glows in the dark when exposed to blacklight?!?! How cool is that?

Snakebite antidote in short supply
Local pet owners may have to be careful of a shortage of snakebite antivenin for dogs as snakebite season currently gets under way.
