What are some of more affordable, easy and reliable methods to move states when you do not have your new place yet and will need access to some of your things once you reach a temporary location?

Which moving services can be trusted?

Are there services that allow you to place your belongings in a pod, lock it yourself, then have it delivered to a storage facility that you would easily be able to access at any time without calling and making an appointment once you get there?

I know of several people that were very happy with PODS.
Check out their website:

Pods work very well for what you're looking for.

You can always have access to the unit, just call ahead. In many cases they will move the "pod" outside for easy access, you are the only one with a key to the box. When making the rental you will have to purchase a lock.

My building will only allow me a 3 hour slot on specific dates to move. PODS wants to deliver their POD and pick it up the next day and they also have specific dates that do not work with my building dates. Any other ideas?? Also, of notice when looking at different times of the year to move, in the month of May it seems moving prices go up significantly ($1000 plus).

Does POD have a local place they can park your POD? If so, then hire a local moving company, like Two Guys and a Truck, to move your stuff from there to your apartment.

If not PODs you can also use Uhaul's U-Pack boxes. Very similar to PODs (Mayflower moving has something similar too). They also move to/from more towns that PODs do, and are usually a little less expensive. We had good results using U-Pack boxes. If you have a vehicle with a trailer hitch (or a friend in your current town) you can pickup the U-Pack from your local U-haul dealer. Take the box(s) home (they load them up on one of their trailers). Then you can pick your 3-hour window to pack out of your apartment. Then drive the boxes/trailer back to your U-haul dealer. They will do the rest to get to your new town. Once you and the boxes are in your new town you contact that local U-Haul dealer and either arrange to go get your boxes, or have the local dealer bring them to your new place. The U-Haul dealer will likely have long term storage on site, or be able to help you find local long-term storage as you setup in your new town.
