I'm in Tucson right now for a few days. Interesting time at the Buffet Bar on 9th last night.

What's your point?

The avg high temp of Flagstaff is over 40F in the winter. That's certainly not a *consistent* below freezing temperature as you claim.

It doesn't STAY below freezing. It GETS below freezing (overnight lows).
BIG difference.
At NO time of the year is Flagstaffs' average high below freezing - not even in January. The average lows - yes. The average highs - no. It get cold at night because of it's elevation, but warms up in the daytime because of it's latitude.

Both you and fc80 are correct----------but for different reasons.

Despite Flag and Seattle having similar average daytime high temps-------the nightime lows do make a huge difference in growing things. Flag is Climate Zone is 5 whereas Seattle these days is Zone 8.

Sure, that's why the USDA has those charts. As a gardener I'm very familiar with them.

Ken

PS: I might point out that when we moved from Bellevue (east of Lake Washington) just a few miles west over into Seattle proper we moved from Zone 8A to 8B - and noticed it the very quickly. The overnight lows here in Seattle were just enough to allow tender biannuals such as snapdragons - to survive (and even bloom - though anemically) through the winter. That doesn't happen too often on the East Side of the lake.
