I am trying to gather information as I am interested in moving to northern AZ in the next 2 months. I am retired with a small pension. I have dogs and horses so would like to be close to a place to ride, close to town (within 20 or 25 miles) I would also like to get a place that has some water for a garden for 1 person. I don't know much about the area so any help would be appreciated.

Show Low was one of the most scenic areas I encountered as an over the road driver in the 70's and 80's. I always thought it would be a nice place to retire. How has the huge fire from several years ago affected the area? Is the area better or worse because of the fires?

The area is still gorgeous

The 2011 Wallow fire was about 30-40 miles east (as the crow flies).

The 2002 Rodeo-Chediski fire got a LOT closer and the town was evacuated, I believe.

Yes, we were evacuated during the Rodeo-Chediski fire. From Forest Lakes to Pinetop and McNary at one time. The most damage from the RC fire can be seen on Hwy 260 between Heber and Show Low. And even the dead matchstick trees there have either been cut down of fallen and started to rot away. Otherwise it is still very beautiful. I was just there last May and even down towards the Wallow fire as in the RC fire, the damage is still checkerboard. I am sure you can see more damage from the Wallow fire near Greer and or Alpine, but I didn't get that far.
