The Arizona Smoking Ban will take effect on May 1st. (2007!)

Smoking won't be allowed in any restaurant or bar in the state. Also, smokers have to stand 20 feet away from the entrance to any restaurant, bar or store...in order to smoke.

No smoking in the workplace either...and there are other restrictions concerning smoking in the common areas of condos, apartments, etc.

Smoking is still permitted in Indian casinos throughout the state. Thought I'd post this information today. How do you feel about it? Desertlovers/Claire

Great. For the 8 days I am left in Arizona I will enjoy it.

Not only do I find such laws to be discriminatory, they also serve to unfairly demonize a portion of society, marking them as targets for derision by the less tolerant or overly judgemental. I happen to find it disgusting if someone near me in a restaurant or grocery store is suffering from a bad case of flatulence. Should these people also be banned from public places? How do I know that their bodily gases do not contain toxic substances due to their eating, drinking or drug taking habits? Another bugbear with me is the propensity some women and men have of over-scenting themselves with strong perfumes or colognes, often caustic enough to burn the hairs in your nose and the skin off your esophagus. Can we enact laws to ban them from wearing scents?

Scotland's pub and restaurant owners are already suffering financially due to the enactment of non-smoking laws and those who own the same types of businesses in England are preparing for the financial losses they will incure when these laws come in force. The same problems will affect Arizona business owners.

It's ridiculous; a bar or restaurant should be able to chose for themselves whether to allow smoking or not. I'm not a heavy smoker and never smoke at work, at a restaurant, or in my house but when I go to a bar, I enjoy a good smoke. I'm also a part-time bartender and I know that many people aren't too happy about this.

Sorry....farting will not kill you. Second hand smoke will.

And the bans in NYC and California have been around for awhile now and the bars there are doing just fine.

As a physician treating many smoking related diseases, I am all in favor of these smoking restrictions. Second hand smoke kills (and stinks)! Put me out of business!

It's funny how smokers have such weak arguments. We don't care if you smoke, we just care if the smoke reaches us. Kill yourself, not us.

Oh yeah, keep your butts in your car ashtray, I don't know why many smokers think they can throw their butts out the window. It's our planet, lets keep it nice while we can.

Weak arguments???

Restaurants are PRIVATE property, open to the public. Non-smokers did not have to enter any establishment which allowed smoking if they were afraid of or offended by the smoke. There were plenty of non-smoking restaurants without the law. You don't want the smoke to reach you? You could have stayed out of places that allowed it.

The point is smoking is legal, healthy or not. The decision should have been left to the individual owners who they chose to cater to. But since it's within the bounds of politically correctness to discriminate against smokers...Just one more right of private citizens erased by the whiners who think everyone must conform to their standards and beliefs.
