Leaving California thank god for retirement. Been looking at Hot Springs Village and am concerned about the fiscal status of the Homeowners Association. Also wondering what utility bills are like. Here’s a question to those that have retired there, would you do it again?

we were raised in CA and love living in Bella Vista which is a development further north, that was started by the same company.. As for utilities, this depends on where in Ca you are living? As for the POA or HOA whichever you call it, I don't think HSV you really have too much to worry about regardless of what you see on paper.

The best advise I can give you and others will agree is to come and visit. We did visit HSV as well as BV For us BV was a better fit but this is not meant to knock HSV. Even though slightly isolated it is wonderful community.

My personal opinion is that that POA has plenty of money, their problem is priorities.

Utility bills (water, sewer, trash, etc) are about $80/month, and include a membership in the ambulance service that is subsidized by the POA.

I'm not retired, but I would move here again.

Jeff, I agree with you. Too many people look at what appears on the bottom line when the numbers are really not 100% the story.

Here is a little story about Hot Springs Village and the actions of the recent regime in charge of the POA.

My wife belongs to book club, one of the ladies there is brand new to the village. They bought a house that had been vacant for a couple of years. Had been moved in for 13 days when a POA “Code Enforcement Officer” knocked on the door with a citation for improper upkeep of their landscaping (weeds) along with a fine schedule if this violation was not taken care of. THIRTEEN DAYS, what a welcome.

I suspect this was the same guy who tried to write me a ticket at the boat ramp for no sticker on my boat trailer, when in fact it had three years worth of stickers exactly where the POA instructed them to be placed.

I moved to HSV three years ago and would do it again in a heartbeat. It’s beautiful, the people are friendly, and taxes are low. I have a 2650 sf home and the electric runs about $90.00 averaged over the year. I have a gas range and fireplace (propane) and it was about $200 and lasted two years before I had to refill.
I think the finances for the POA are fine.

Have a parent in HSV. Very Nice place except I don’t give the local hospitals any credit. Parent went to er one night with gastrointestinal issues and a racing heart (turned out to be afib, told er dr. He didn’t know what was wrong but felt terrible). Dr. Diagnosed him with anxiety issues instead of afib, called in a script and sent him home. Dr responded with “well you’re old” when he told the er dr he felt really bad. Little Rock is where you want to be if seriously ill and even that is not a given. Same parent wound up in a Little Rock hospital a couple of years later with a heart issue. Doctors there told him there wasn’t anything they could do for him because he was too old. So they said to just call hospice and wait it out. Brought him to Texas where his problem was resolved and he is still healthy and living in HSV. Now the level of kindness and compassion among nursing staff etc at hospitals is super good but if you’re old, the hospitals likely won’t save your life if you’re really sick.

HSV was developed by the same company that developed Bella Vista and we love BV. I have heard similar stories about HSV that you are saying: medical care especially when we are talking the hospital could be better. The only other problem I could see is the POA dues are much higher, but otherwise I am sure moving there is mostly pluses.

btw anyone moving to HSV will get their share of negative comments about POAs we get them here as well. Again there are more positives about POA than negatives but people delight in telling the bad side of things. There are always jerks in every organization.
