How about the Visayan-speaking people of Mindanao? Are they Visayans or are they Mindanaoan tribes who happen to speak Visayan languages? I'm also intringued by the Chavacano-speaking Zamboageños, the so-called Asia's only Latin-language-speaking ethnic group. Are they a separate ethnic group from Visayan people? Or are they Visayans but have come to adopt a totally separate language?
Cebuano is the dominant mother tongue in Mindanao now. There are also pockets of Ilonggo speakers and some Tagalog speakers too. These are the three languages that the Christian population (who are the majority except in southwestern Mindanao) in Mindanao speak natively. They either immigrated from the Visayas to Mindanao or picked up the dominant language. There is no distinction and no one can tell based on physical appearance alone. There are also some closely related languages that are only spoken in Mindanao too. Butuanon is on the verge of becoming extinct and is supplanted by Cebuano. Surigaonon is very closely related to Cebuano, it probably is just a dialect and not a separate language. People in Surigao will code-switch to standard Cebuano though when talking to people from outside the area.
The Muslim groups in Mindanao speak their own languages. The three most common are Tausug, Maguindanao and Maranaw.
Chavacano is the lingua franca of Zamboanga City. The speakers are not a separate ethnic group. Most are immigrants from other provinces who adopted the lingua franca of the city as their mother tongue. A lot of people from Zamboanga City can speak other languages too. I believe Cebuano is the most common for the Christians; Tausug and Yakan the most common for the Muslims in Zamboanga City.
