The cost of living is significantly higher in Singapore for everyday grocery items.
visit Welcome to Cold Storage and you should be able to view grocery items.
Beer and wine are also very expensive. a pint of larger would cost around 12 $ US in many of the bars around the central business area.
Food can be as cheap or expensive as your budget allows. hawker food and local food courts are cheap but 'western' restaurants are expensive. Singapore Food Guide - Singapore Restaurants, Eating Guide and Reviews - HGW you can look up some restaurants.
Most people in Singapore use taxis and public transport to get around the cost of owning a car is prohibitively expensive.
As foadi said housing and utilities are usually paid for if you will be on an expat assignment.
I have no idea what the cost of living index says - your HR dept probably have a calculation for it.
try to get an 'awareness' trip so you can see Singapore for yourself. Is it just you or do you have a family going ? Its a great place for families. very safe. but its a bit dull for a single guy. oh and VERY HOT !!!!
Its a great place to tour around the rest of Asia.
because after the gulfstreams and rolls royce phantoms, it's hard to put food on the table with a meager 220K.
i exaggerate, but seriously, i don't get these kinds of questions.
Post to boast.
Yeah, US$220k is plenty to live on in Stinkapore. Just stay out of Malaysia; in other words, let your salary drive up the price of everything in the Big Stink, but not in Malaysia. All of the part-time maids, street-sweepers, clerks, construction workers and etc. have to move to JB because they can't afford to live in the Big Stink anymore. Too many bankers and financial Talking Heads (e.g., Jim Rogers) are moving there.
That's the good news: your salary is generously sufficient by Asian standards.
Oh, it's not hate, but rather a term of endearment.
New York = The Big Apple
Minneapolis = The Little Apple (Minnie-Apple, get it?)
Bangkok = The Big Mango
Singapore = The Big Stink
Nearly on the equator, Stinkapore has very smelly air much of the time. Not too much wind to take the polluted air away and a very humid, sticky climate makes for inversions and gray days.
The tape covers my nose.
