The tallest man in the world is Mongol, from Inner Mongolia. Mongols tend to be taller than most other Asians, but I guess we're counting Mongolia as Inner Asia, not East Asia?
Average height of South Korean males is over 5'9 now I think. Average height of North Korean males is 5'6......Diet and health plays a big part of it.
I think in general though the southeast asians are shorter. People that come from hot climates just tend to be short. Even in Africa, most people are short. African Americans tend to be tall on average but that is for complex reasons.
Short people are everywhere though. On my dads side I have a great grandfather from Germany and on my mom's side I have a g-g grandfather from Austria. These are two countries stereotyped for producing tall hulking men. Both of my ancestors stood proud at 5'6. lol!
Brazil is more than 4 inches taller than it's neighbors Bolivia and Peru but same height as Argentina and Uruguay, don't have stats on Venezuela, Paraguay, Suriname and the Guyana's.
Height is a genetic marker like other characteristics. Its nothing to figure out. They are short because they are suppose to be short. Its like the eyes. Asians have short heights, and unique eye shapes. They are identifiable genetic traits.
This doesn't explain why people like my 100% Chinese cousin is 6'2" yet his parents are just of average height for their race.
Environmental factors are a major part in differences in height, for example the average height of an urban Dutch male in 1856 was 5"2', they're now amongst the tallest in the world averaging 6" for males.
I don't think the difference in height when people adopt a Western diet is due to dairy ingestion. Only five percent of Asians, as adults, can digest milk properly.
If the change is diet, it is probably protein ingestion, meat and more fish.
