Yeah the Koreans are often grouped with the Japanese, but they do seem in between Japanese and Chinese culturally, although they've got their own unique thing. Isn't Gangnam one of the most expensive districts though?
Check this guy out where his apartment is $600/month in cool/hip area.

Yeah Gangnam is Korea's version of Manhattan and is quite expensive. I was working for perhaps the most famous Korean company when I was there.
It's amazing how different Korea is from China when you consider they're bascially a peninsula of China. That's what we were amazed about. I think the Koreans are less reserved than Japanese and they also are more fashion conscious. Japan owned Korea for awhile and Koreans picked up some of that culture but I haven't been around enough Japanese to get a really good perspective on the differences.

Yes the stereotype is that Koreans care a lot about their appearance. I wonder if that is also the case outside Seoul.
Taiwan, especially Taipei, is an interesting insight into a basically mostly Chinese society with significant Japanese influence. I wonder if their politeness and comparative neatness is from Japanese influence.
Local Shanghainese people are quite different from other Chinese. They think of themselves an upper group in Mainland China. The low paid jobs in Shanghai are done by the other Chinese from poorer region. Local Shanghainese are more into foreign cultures. With Beijing being a political center, Shanghai will be the most important economic city in Mainland China, it will become more expensive. Shanghai lacks a trendy or pop culture like that of Japan or Korea. Shanghai is about business.
Korea is cheaper than Japan, Singapore & HK. Wage is lower. Korea is more unique in culture, they don't like to lean towards the Japanese. Koreans are very proud of their own culture.
Having lived in S.Korea for many years with several travels to China and Japan, I'd say the overall cultural differences are (roughly) :
South Korea vs. China is like comparing US and Mexico
South Korea vs. Japan is like comparing anglophone vs. francophone
These are based on my observations
China is much more diverse than Korea and Japan. It is hard to compare the cultures.
Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Hong Kong are very different. Not to mention Urumqi and Lhasa.
I don't see similarities between Chinese culture and Mexican culture at all.
Chinese have no faith. Mexicans are pretty much Catholic.
Chinese have small families now. Mexicans have a lot of kids.
Chinese emphasize performance in school. Mexicans less.
There is no racial/ethnic hierarchy in China. The hierarchy is very obvious in Mexico.

I only meant how much cultural differences there are between nearby asian countries in comparison to weighing out the cultural differences between certain nearby western nations. I wasn't making ANY comparisons b/w an asian country vs. western nation, etc.

If not for Communism Shanghai could have taken over Hong Kong's role, even become a British colony or something, and Wu might have had the global influence Cantonese has today.

Are you kidding me? Any non-Korean who has been to both Korea and Japan knows that Korea has had ripped off many Japanese cultual products. You know "Taekwon V", the heroic robot star in Korea? The creators of Taekwon V have finally admitted that they copied the classic Japanese robot animation, particularly ''Mazinger Z. "
And don't forget "Pepero Day". "Pepero" is made by Lotte Korea and common sense dictates that they copied the Japanese snack "Pocky".
