The disneyland in Shanghai will open next year and it will be the 2nd largest Disney land in the world only after Orlando. Will it become a major asian tourist destination?
Yes, it already is, isn't? I mean not on the level of Singapore, Hong Kong, or Bangkok, but visitor numbers are rising aren't they? China's overall visitors are rising, aside from the last couple of years. It's like no. 3 or 4 in the world now.
Shanghai is one of the most visited city in Mainland, maybe after beijing. I don't know the statistics. Internationally, Shanghai is still known for being a business center, not a tourist attraction.
But with the new Disneyland, does it have the potential to rival HK?

Well I've heard that Disneyland Hong Kong is a bit of a let down...it will definitely attract more Chinese tourists, dunno about Asian or other tourists...there's also Disneyland Tokyo.
Shanghai is the perfect place for a holiday if you love crowds, high prices and thick smog. I am sure Shanghai Disney will fill that criteria admirably.
Why it is a major tourist destination I will never know, I would rank it very close the worst place i have ever visited.

are you talking also about Paris, London or NYC? All with crowds, bad air quality and high price.
Naturally, the more attractive a city is, the more crowds you will see.

Well, Shanghai still lacks attractions in the city itself. There are many foreign tourists, but they will only stay a couple of days and then head to neighboring cities like Hangzhou or Suzhou. It is good to add a few attractions like the Disneyland. The other places of interest may be Shanghai expo site and Bund.
in comparison, Beijing has more options for tourists in the city, but does not have good nearby towns for a short excursion.

Asian CITIES with most international arrivals (by airplane) last year...
1.Bangkok 16 million
2.Singapore 11.8
3.Istanbul 10.4
4.Dubai 9.9
5.Kuala Lumpur 9.2
6.Hong Kong 8.7
7.Seoul 8.2
8.Shanghai 6.5
9.Tokyo 5.8
10.Taipei 5.2
11.Riyadh 5.0
12.Beijing 4.8
Taipei and especially Riyadh higher than Beijing? That's a big surprise. Beijing is one of China's tourist showpieces.
