Japanese cartoons were broadcasted on tv channels in China in the 80s or 90s according to some chinese, this is no longer the case on most channels nowadays. China now has a domestic cartoon industry, decreasing the amount of foreign cartoons.
Most youth in China know little about Japanese culture. Most are unable to name one or two famous Japanese people, including those war time miltary figures in the Sino-Japanese war, their names appear on war films every few hours on tv in China.
It is true that China does not import as many cartoons as before, but Japanese cartoons are declining worldwide as well.
Relatively speaking, Chinese don't know much about any foreign country, not just Japan. Probably 80% Chinese don't know any south Korean city except Seoul. This is more or less like Americans.
I was reading an article that Japanese pop culture is surprisingly popular among young people in China. I wonder if the two countries are becoming more similar, since China is becoming richer and more industrialized and high-tech.
China's a very long way from catching up to Japan or Korea economically. A very, very long way.
The kids I teach all happily digest Japanese cartoons, manga, etc. and the merch related to them, but I don't think that most of them really care where it comes from. Most young, urban Chinese think that Japanese products are great and have some respect for some of the cultural norms, but may still harbor negative feelings about Japan and the Japanese at the same time.
You could sum it up as: "they make great cars, safe food products, make the best animation, and have cute girls, but they're still a bunch of bastards because they haven't apologized enough for WW2 yet." The same that you have people in the EU who love kebab but hate the Arab and North African immigrants who make it, or people in the US who love tacos and burritos but don't like Mexicans or their culture.
In any case, no, I don't see China becoming more like Japan at all, really.
China will never be becoming more like Japan.
The chinese government will try their best to prevent their country like Japan in culture, and surpass Japan in most fields, notably economy, brand names, sport competitions...
I live in China. Some guys may like Anime, but American pop culture is probably the most popular. You hear Taylor Swift songs at the department stores, lots of guys love the NBA, everyone watches American TV, etc.
Who cares what's on the government controlled TV channels? People are getting more and more of their fix over the internet. They watch stuff on their phones.

The economy here is nothing like Japan in the '80s. It is very much an economy of manual laborers and small-mid size businesses.

Do Japanese people also look down on the Taiwanese?
My Chinese gf would say something like "Taiwan is China!" But really they are quite different nowadays. Much more Japanese influence in Taiwan, much more western influence as well. Taiwanese people mostly look down on mainlanders. Don't know how Japanese feel about Taiwanese but I would think it's quite different than mainland Chinese.
Part of the problem is you go hiking on some beautiful serene mountain like Aishan in Taiwan and you can hear the Chinese tour groups a mile away. Leaves a bad impression.
All the developed countries in Asia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Israel are more western than China because they are or were US's and UK's allies. East Asian tigers were all colonies of Japan or Britain, only Korea resent colonial rule. Taiwanese are not very resentful to past Japanese rule. Chiang Kai-shek studied in Japan, liked the goods of Japan but hated Japan mostly only for invading China.
Japan look down on other asian countries but have better relation with Taiwan than China and Korea because the Taiwanese is much less resentful to Japan. People in Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore generally also like Japanese cultures unlike the Mainland Chinese.
