I was reading an article that Japanese pop culture is surprisingly popular among young people in China. I wonder if the two countries are becoming more similar, since China is becoming richer and more industrialized and high-tech.

You're probably talking about Korean pop culture(K-Pop) which is the mainstream in most of Asia.

The people are vastly different.
Japanese people are super polite, extremely considerate, very aware of every aspect of their surroundings, tend to beautify everything from a plate of food, to details around their houses, etc.
China...no awareness of politeness, not considerate, come across very rude. Very practical and functional. Why paint a building? Food and products are always questionable, etc.
I don't think you could get two countries to be more different.
No for most young people in China, maybe slightly more so among urban youths than rural youths, japanese culture is highly frown upon in mainstream PRC society, particularly among middle age and old Chinese. Japanese pop culture is much more popular in Taiwan and Southeast Asia than in China. Anti-Japanese war films are frequently broadcasted on tv channels in China, and they are almost the only programmes Chinese can hear people speaking in Japanese on tv. Chinese actors acting as Japanese soldiers speak in Japanese in those films.
And yes, Korean pop culture is the most popular among all foreign cultures in China.

Not completely true. When I was a child, everyone read Japanese manga. Japanese horror movies etc were popular too.
Also, Korean pop culture has little influence on 30+ people, because it is a relatively new thing.
Japanese cartoons were broadcasted on tv channels in China in the 80s or 90s according to some chinese, this is no longer the case on most channels nowadays. China now has a domestic cartoon industry, decreasing the amount of foreign cartoons.
Most youth in China know little about Japanese culture. Most are unable to name one or two famous Japanese people, including those war time miltary figures in the Sino-Japanese war, their names appear on war films every few hours on tv in China.
