there is no conclusion yet that it was a terrorist bombing. it is believed that explosive equipment was stored in a warehouse, and that some type of accident caused this.

the question is why so MUCH of explosive material in one place?

they are investigating it.

How terrible. that mushroom cloud was shocking, with what could come to mind.

There was a warehouse full of nitrates stored there, all indications thus far are that it went "boom." There was scheduled maintenance on the warehouse that included welding, from what I read... Hezbollah has denied Israel had anything to do with it which is saying something since they usually wouldn't hesitate to blame them

I feel like this should be discussed in the Europe forum. France was at least partially to blame for the Lebanese Civil War, which Lebanon never recovered from.

Got this from the New York Times dated August 5, 2020
"There were 2,750 tons of the fertilizer in the Beirut warehouse, roughly equivalent to 1,155 tons of TNT, which would produce a large enough blast wave to destroy most buildings within around 800 feet, and would shatter glass far beyond a range of 1.25 miles."
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/05/w...m-nitrate.html

That's one helluva bang. Other sources quote anywhere from 1 to 2.5 kT of TNT equivalent but 1.1 is plenty big enough to do the damage it did. For those who are interested in ranking the biggest ever accidental non nuclear blasts, this one comes in at Number 6 (believe it or not there were five others which were worse!) and the biggest one since 1947.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larges...ear_explosions

Death toll as of today, August 8 is 157. There are at least 5000 injured and 80 counted as still missing.
