There’s a new anime with the English title of “Those Snow White Notes”. It’s not a science fiction, fantasy, nor other traditional popular forms of anime. It’s about a guy who plays a traditional Japanese instrument and is trying to find his sound after the death of his grandfather who taught him. The visuals and music are mesmerizing. Found out the people performing the music are professional musicians and singers lending their talents to this story.

Is this instrument considered to be like a rural country traditional instrument? Has the reception to this show been well received in Japan? Are there any cultural traditions tied to this instrument and music?

Can you explain the meaning and history of this song as well? The guy playing the instrument is a high school teenager and the lady singing is his mother who left her two sons behind with their grandfather while she went to the city for a big career. This was the first time they met in some time.

looks like a samisen,cant see the whole thing.
samisen is usally played by musicians when guests came to geisha house to be entertained,they are musicians,not geishas

You can see the shamisen clearly when the old man sits facing us, around around 1 min. 02 seconds into the video. The instrument looks exactly like the following:
