I believe this is the reason the TBan stayed alive. All those abused children, must have ran to them. Americans not protect them. One of these boys even killed a group of marines who were right there as he was being abused. The marines were told to do nothing.
How does such a deeply muslim and conservative society like Afghanistan have something like this in their culture? Apparently this is something they've always had with the young boys. It didnt just start when America came to town.

No, it didn’t. I was first aware of it when I read The Kite Runner. Personally, I find it a puzzling and abhorrent practice, but don’t fully understand its roots and role in the current culture.

It was seen in other Muslim cultures too. For example, Yaqub Beg, a ruler in Xinjiang from 1865 to 1877 was a boy dancer when he was young.
To those of you who said this is gross and offensive, is it that way because the abused are male or is because they're young? Would you even bother to comment if the dancers are girls?

In modern days, any sexual abuse on children is gross.
Rape in any form is abhorrent. If it is done to children it is 100x worse.
I wonder if the practice is perpetuated in large part because it is specifically done to children. If exposed to this when their brain is not yet fully developed, their young age and undeveloped psychological state plays a role in shaping their subsequent views of what is ‘normal’ and culturally ‘acceptable’.
I note that the Afghan author of The Kite Runner framed the act as harmful to his friend, and one that required him to show atonement for by rescuing his friend’s son from the same fate. I am assuming he is drawing from deep, personal knowledge of the history and culture of his native country.
