As much as his supporters will deny it, Xi really is the Donald Trump of China. Tearing down decades of peace building across the Taiwan strait to drum up nationalist sentiment. Unbelievably irresponsible leadership.

What is the point of invading a tiny island?

UKR is at least massive, and has more mild climate than most of RU.

But Taiwan is like a big HK.

With the way China's economy is and Taiwan's is, the Chinese will own all the expensive and nice RE along the beachfronts anyways.

Symbolism. China believes that Taiwan is rightfully theirs. The reality on the ground is entirely different though, as very few Taiwanese want to be unified with the Mainland.

After all Taiwan used to be part of China many, many years ago in the 19th century, however China was forced to give up Taiwan from the Japanese at the end of the 19th century. China was humiliated then, just as they were humiliated by other wars they were involved in that era, with the loss of Hong Kong to the British. Plus other world powers at that time humiliated the Chinese government such as Russia, France, Germany and the USA with unequal trade deals, and those countries sending troops to China, to protect their interests.

However Taiwan and China were one country with the defeat of Japan at the end of WW2 when the ruling government of that era was the Nationalist government which was backed by the USA. However there was s civil war then between the Nationalists and Communists and eventually the Communists won the war. The Nationalist forces and government fled to Taiwan.

Since then Taiwan and China have been at each other throats. With no end in sight. The Chinese government sees if they take over Taiwan it will be the final symbolic victory against the so called "Nationalist Government" of China. It is then where China can govern Taiwan on its own terms without foreign interference.
