I've read some early reports that the assassin was the son of a woman who bankrupted her family by donating all of their money to the Unification Church.
Apparently Abe was tied somehow to the Unification Church, if not as a member then as someone sympathetic to it or otherwise entangled with it.
The assassin wanted to target church leadership but considered that task too difficult so instead he decided to target a prominent politician associated with the church.

It is an honor for me to speak together with my good friend former US president Donald Trump at this Rally of Hope hosted by UPF in the presence of heads of state, parliamentarians, and religious leaders from 150 countries, addressing today's problems and engaging in dialogue on how to create a better world.

I read an early report along that line, as well, although the report I read had not yet identified which 'organization' the man had a grievance against.
