It’s all about stereotypes - and an unwillingness to see people for individuals rather than as part of a large group (who, due to an association with a said group - surely must mean ‘they’ all think that way lol). In my opinion, all religious people do not think alike - anymore than all atheists or agnostics. When people from either ‘side’ approach with antagonistic emotions - or the attitude of ‘you are wrong, stupid, etc.’, it immediately shuts down my interest in what they have to say. I’m an agnostic, and I find I get more backlash from atheists than I do from religious folks.

I'm sorry to hear that as atheism has more in common with the agnostics than we might realise. The religious, understandably, might read "Agnostic" as a God -believer with some doubts.

I think most people understand an agnostic is not a Christian and is not religious - lol.

Perhaps so, which is why I am dismayed that you have (as you say) been getting bad feedback from atheists; we should know that we are bretheren. And sisteren, of course.

Since ‘brethren’ is typically referred to as ‘fellow Christians or male members of a religious order’, it’s not the word I would use. And what I meant about receiving more negative comments from atheists than religious folks in re to my agnosticism, it’s in their refusal to accept my self-imposed label of agnostic (often implying I must believe in ‘God’ if I’m not an atheist).

Most honest Christians are "Agnostic Theists."

There's nothing black and white about that statement^. And that's an excellent way to evoke conversation, especially among adults.

Perhaps I'ml trying to hi -jack the feeling of fellowship in 'Brethren' in saying that atheists and agnotics are 'brethren'. Not because agnostics have a god belief (which many, in my experience, do) but because they have doubts and questions and are very often 'nones' - they do not do organised religion.

We may dicker about the semantics and terminology, but surely to try to clarify thoughts and agreed meanings. Not to get antagonistic with Agnostics. That's one thing we should not be doing.

Some agnostic, if not most, admit to not knowing whether or not there are any Gods and quite a few also admit to not caring one way or the other.

Agnostics do not have any need for there not to be any Gods or for the existence of any Gods. It's a neutral position. It's the zero on the integer scale.
