I usually smile and nod. Its such a safe gesture. lol If someone sneezes around me, I'll say "Pardon you." or "Excuse you", if I say anything.

I say 'Bless you and Thank you", so, it's nothing more then just a saying. Actually in Russia we say "For health", it has never had any religious meanings.

Is it only in America we put religion to everything we do/say?? Makes me wonder.....

For the most part it makes me uncomfortable. I know more times than not there are good intentions behind it but I'd rather they just tell me I'm going to hell than say Bless You.

"Bless You"

How do most of you handle these kind of comments?
It's doesn't strike me as a particularly urgent situation when someone says bless you which as others have mentioned usually is a verbal response to a sneeze. I guess I'd rather have someone say "bless you" than "God damn you" after I've sneezed. It's actually a rather strange tradition because a sneeze isn't exactly a symptom for a heart attack or some other serious condition and I've occasionally knocked off four or five in a row and after getting a "bless you" for the first one or two people generally get bored with the whole episode and move on to something else.

In a situation where a person knows me, and still uses a religious statement, I will make a judgment of weather it was a joke or an insult and will respond as needed.

If it is a sneeze, than the blessing is an empty blessing, and nothing more than a habit coming in play. I just excuse my sneeze and move on.
I think its a little close-minded to assume religion is a sign of weakness....
or even assume the term "bless you" has any religious conotation added to it
when spoken....

I don't like it when someone blesses me, I find it presumptuous, especially on CD.
In life, if I sneeze, I usually ignore it if the god part isn't added. Normally I don't live in the US so it's not an issue.

It really irritates me when, on CD, you ask people to not bless you and they insist in their arrogance, ignorance or rudeness to continue to do so.

I find, when it is brought up in business, it is a sure sign of the party trying to divert attention to an issue other than the business at hand. I see that as a weakness, and it has not proved wrong in many years. Preach to me and I will check my wallet in business or in my personal life. I don’t meant to be ugly, but it is the truth.

When you say “bless you”, how do you mean it? I will be surprised if it is not based in a religious context, and in most cases if even in business I will just ignore it. If I feel you are making a jab, or an insult, I may hand you your head, verbally speaking of course.

I'm more comfortable when people leave anything related to god out of polite conversation. It's quite presumptuous to assume everyone is xian.
