5 of us are thinking of renting a place on Hampton St NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. We are students of Georgia Tech.
I have heard safety issues in this area. Can you please guide me if this would be a proper place to stay?

Are other areas in Homepark safe options?

It's 1 block from Northside drive. You'll find higher levels of crime and robbery, not to mention access issues due to traffic. I would look further east in home park. Or if you drive to Tech, check out Berkeley Park - the neighborhood south of the howell mill shopping district.

I went to Tech, lived on Campus, Homepark, b/t Northside and Howell Mill near Kroger, Centennial Place, Fernwood.

Crime in all areas but the closer we were to the projects and bankhead highway the worse the crime.

On campus - buddies car stolen
Homepark - multiple car break ins one block from 10th on State Street
Near Kroger - one car break in
Fernwood - no problems
Centennial Place - apartment broken into (big loss, computers, playstation, etc)

I've had several friends live in Home Park who have never had any problems. There is higher crime in the area then the suburbs but Tech is in the middle of the city so you have to expect a little higher crime. I also had some friends who lived in Berkeley Park and were active in the neighborhood association and they never had or heard of any problems either.

The closer to the south and west the worse off you are going to be. Most of the project are gone and the areas west Northside are turning from a primarily industrial area to an warehouse loft district with hip restaurants, coffee shops and art gallery's but it is still a sketchy.

Another place to look (although it would be more expensive) is midtown. You might be able to find a house there to rent (or part of a house) and you are still close to tech (biking distance, or walk to Tech Trolley depending on where in Midtown).
