I'm moving to Atlanta in a couple months and was planning on purchasing a house in Northern Atlanta (Alpheretta, Woodstock, Canton, Marietta, Roswell, Acworth region). Does anyone know the average commute times from these cities to Emory? Which road has less traffic/ accidents, Turner McDonald Parkway (400) or I-75? Also, does anyone know the commute time from the west side of Atlanta (Austel) to Emory? Thanks!

Those communities would not offer a good commute to Emory.

If you are interested in the types of communities you listed...and you want a good/decent commute to Emory, check out the South Lilburn/Mountain Park/Parkview Area and the North Snellville/Brookwood Area. Both areas are in Gwinnett County. Both areas are very similar to the Northern Atlanta communities you listed.

Here is a helpful map:

*In the map above, the Parkview Cluster and the Brookwood Cluster outline the areas where you should look. When searching for a home, make sure you're looking in the Parkview High or Brookwood High school districts in order to meet a "Northern Atlanta-like" criteria.

The Grayson Cluster/Grayson High school district would be a decent alternative and still offer a decent commute to Emory.

I hope this helps. Good Luck!

I second this; you're getting similar amenities, school quality and housing price points as you are in the MW metro communities that you cite, and you are setting yourself up for a much easier commute.

The OP was obviously not interested in Gwinnett Co.
A couple that lives in my neighborhood both work at Emory- They leave fairly early but their trip is around 45mins.

There is nothing obvious about it, and I certainly don't infer any such thing from the OP's inquiry.

Perhaps incorrectly, I would infer the OP knows very little about metro Atlanta.

I suppose a dedicated commuter might consider Alpharetta or Roswell but in my wildest dreams areas like Woodstock, Marietta, Canton and Austell wouldn't be worth considering.

Once you complete the interstate segment which is no picnic and likely to involve an hour of intensity, then you must confront the intown traffic--2 lane streets and it is stop and go for at least 45 minutes.

Exactly--I think there is evidence that the OP does not know much about Metro Atlanta...

One of my sons teaches part time at Emory, and commutes from Milton (just outside of Alpharetta/Roswell). If he leaves home at 10:00 am, it takes him 45 minutes to get there. If it's an evening class, he has to leave 2.5 hours before.

I REALLY appreciate the advice! I didn't realize that the traffic was that bad from Northern Atlanta to Emory. I didn't know if the traffic was horrible for both highways from the north (400 and I-75)/ I was hoping that one highway would be a little less busy. So overall, it looks like you guys would recommend the East side of Atlanta and if I was insane enough to live on the North side of Atlanta, I should take highway 400 instead of I-75. Thanks
