I went into an "antique" shop in Midtown and they tried to sell me a horrible reproduction of a Renoir for $800, while trying to pass it off as the real thing. Little did the sales girl know that I knew a little some about art myself as a former art student and had already seen that particular painting hanging in a museum. I let her know as much. She was embarrassed and angry with me.

They need to learn more about French impressionists paintings and what they are truly worth before trying to dupe people. The real thing would go for thousands, not $800 lol.

A place tried to tell me the coffee table I was looking at was an English antique, they didnt have coffee tables a 100 years ago to start, also the real antiques in England are kept in England, whats left of them anyhow, most of the good old furniture in the UK was destroyed by woodworm years ago until they found out how to deal with that, the well preserved antiques go to museums not sent abroad.

She was only off by a factor of 10,000 or so. Renoirs have been going in the $60-80 million range.

Depends on the work and the media. Some go for millions, some go for $100,000 plus.

So you think they are lying when they advertise these tables as being from the 1700s?

William Word Fine Antiques: consoles:

Or these armoires as being from the 18th and 19th century?

Or this Biedermeier chest as fake?

I must say they do look good, I'm just very skeptical when people use the word Antique
