Believe me, I KNOW my real estate taxes will be WAY lower but what about my husbands take home pay assuming it's the exact same salary (it wouldn't be but to make it simpler). I looked up NYS tax rate and it was something like 6.875 and then I looked up GA tax rates and it was something like 6.0. I am not a CPA and have no tax knowledge at all. We have someone do our taxes. Does this mean that we will pay only .875% less taxes in GA than in NY when filing our state returns? I thought NY was so excessive but GA doesn't seem much better in that regard.

For all of you that have been helping us make our decision on where to move, I thank you. We are still debating and going back and forth with salary with the company. I'm trying to figure out where all of our savings will come in. Thanks for any help you can provide!

It depends on what tax bracket you are in, I don't think anyone can tell you without knowing that.

It seems like the only thing you are looking at is state income tax rate. I dont think there are that any differences between states when you look at that. You have to look at other taxes you are paying, and those differences. One is property tax, another is cost of living. I am sure there are several others, but I dont know what they are. It would probably be easier to just ask a CPA.

Georgia taxes are lower altogether that NY. I can't tell you exact figures but, having lived in both locales, I speak from a little experience. I will say that public services were on a whole other level up there compared to here. The parks were top notch and the city was pretty clean, especially considering the population. Public transportation, museums, and libraries were no comparison either. One particularly cool thing about NYC is the lack of tax on clothing items <$110(heard they were trying to nix that).

It's true you get what you pay for. I can appreciate both sides of the coin though.

Where in NYS are you coming from? Property taxes will be higher here in GA but income taxes are probably lower.

You also have to factor in stuff like sales taxes and gas taxes. They can really add up.

Car insurance is one of the biggest things that shocked me. I didn't have my car up there but I checked a while back when i was considering moving back up there and taking everything and my rate skyrocketed to about 6 times what I pay here.

If he works in NYC area, there probably also is a city tax he pays. Not to mention near $10 tolls to cross bridges and such on a daily basis.

Keep in mind he/she is a NY Upstater or the Buffalo area. There is a drastic difference in Upstate NY and the boro's of NYC.

All in all it is about a wash in the cost of living.
Housing here is higher
Property tax here is cheaper
Car insurance here is higher
Income tax is less
License fees in NY are higher
Car tax here exceeds NY
Heating in NY is higher
Cooling in GA is cheaper.

One needs to look at the whole picture.

Now, to compare to NYC and New Jersey? Well, there is no comparison.
Everything here cheaper
Everything there higher.

One thing for sure NY and GA is equal in this years election for Governor.
Each has a greasy, left wing, say what you need to say Democrat running against a crazy, looney, Republican. In short, in this arena both states are screwed equally!
