Civil War marker may be moved off MLK Drive *| ajc.com

I truly don't get it.
And how is Underground Atlanta the "heart of the Civil Rights district?" Isn't that Old Fourth Ward?

This is ridiculous. You would think that the NAACP wouldn't mind having a plaque there that commemorates Sherman gutting the Confederacy. It sounds like the memorial is pretty neutral, and doesn't say anything derogatory toward African Americans. It's just history. I don't get it.

I agree. I do not understand it. It would be one thing if the plaque was historically inaccurate or offensive but that is not what I am getting from this at all. If anything I see it as evidence of how far African Americans have come since then that the place Sherman began his march to sea at is now named after MLK.

"Mommy, what was Dr. King fighting for and why did they name this street after him?"

"Nobody really knows, honey. The NAACP says it's inappropriate to know about about the past."

No, it is not offensive.

It does not need to be moved off of MLK Drive.

There should be no issue about this--and I am not happy to see this going on.

I don't get it either. I'm black and I'm not offended in the slightest. It's just history.

The Civil war marker is fine right where it is. I am greatly disappointed in the actions of the NAACP right now, at least the Atlanta chapter anyways.

You would think that a little cognitive dissonance would be in order in this case, but I guess not.

The NAACP is showing its irrelevance more and more in these types of cases.

The NAACP sounds like the Khmer Rouge. "You are not allowed to remember anything prior to what we declared to be year Zero"
