Your pic looks almost exactly like the final incident that made us cut down our red maple which had been shedding small limbs for years then finall scraped down the side of our house and took our power line with a huge limb (no real damage, fortunately). I have heard that maples are pretty notorious for weak limbs, perhaps because I think they grow pretty fast? For your replacement tree, a really cool one would be a live oak, but it would probably take several years to mature to the point of providing canopy. Not sure if this applies to you, but if you have a septic tank in your back yard you may not want to plant a tree near it.
