Metro Atlanta is witnessing a data center building boom that has put it on the cusp of becoming one of the nation’s top-tier markets. The region, which has more than 50 data centers, is seeing a surge in new construction, as global demand for the mammoth server farms outstrips supply.

Quality Technology Services has acquired about 21 acres adjacent to its Suwanee data center, where it could develop a roughly 200,000-square-foot data center. While the size and configuration will depend on anchor tenants’ requirements, it will be on par with the nearby 363,000-square-foot Suwanee data center, QTS Vice President Chris ..

All that means is lots of air conditioned rooms with banks and banks of servers. Not much in the way of jobs and a lot of power usage.

They are massive water users, too.

Isn't this what a lot of the buildings on Marietta Street downtown are used for?

Tony, that is interesting. I knew some data centers were scattered out in the suburbs. I would have guessed the metro to have maybe about 20-30 datacenter locations, but I didn't really know the range. 50 is indeed quite a bit.

Yes, koko339, many of the large buildings near Five Points on Marietta and a bit on Peachtree St. Over a decade ago, more of them were office space used by banks, some retail and other businesses. MathmanMathman is right, fewer jobs overall for the areas they take up and they use lots of power. Many datacenters have lots of automation built into their systems, and as such the on-sight building maintenance staff is quite small nowadays. I would prefer these buildings be used than be completely empty, but I can see some drawbacks for buildings housing high-end computer gear.

What's going to happen to them in 10 years when a single microchip has the same processing power as a data center full of servers does today?

The demand for computing power will be larger, and the rooms of servers will be filled with computers with super chips in them

It isn't about processing power as much as it is about server data space. Lots of data to store and host.
